    Guarda, in the Serra da Estrela, and the following year he made his big snow and ice climbing debut in the Alps. He was the first Portuguese to climb Everest and has conquered the highest peaks in the world without the use of artificial oxygen. He has written several books and made documentaries, and was awarded by the Portuguese State as a Commander of the Portuguese Honorific Order of Merit.
