On World Brain Day we remember the importance of this organ that drives our mind, emotions and cognitive abilities. But we're focusing on a crucial aspect of our well-being: mental health.

Whether you're an athlete aiming to improve your sporting performance, a professional who wants to reach their maximum potential at work or someone who simply wants to find balance in their day-to-day life, mental health is a key factor. It plays an essential role in all areas of our lives.

We know that mental health care is often neglected or even stigmatized. However, World Brain Day is an opportunity to highlight the importance of taking care of our brains and promoting mental well-being in all spheres of our lives.

  • The body doesn't do anything that the head doesn't want it to. That's also why we need to take care of our mental well-being and pay attention to the signs. If this is true for anyone, it's decisive for an athlete. It's essential to fight stigma and pay more attention to the world that lives inside our heads.

8 tips to improve mental health on World Brain Day

In order to improve your mental health, it's important to realize that it's an ongoing process that involves a combination of care and daily habits. So on World Brain Day, we suggest a few tips to help you improve your mental health:

  1. Take time for yourself every day: this can include activities such as meditation, physical exercise, relaxing activities, time outdoors or reading a book.
  2. Take care of your diet: A balanced diet has a significant impact on mental health. You should choose nutrient-rich foods in your diet, such as fruit, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and healthy fats. Reduce your intake of sugar, caffeine and processed foods to a minimum.
  3. Go for quality sleep: sleep plays a crucial role in mental health. Create a healthy sleep routine and make sure you get between 7 and 9 hours of sleep a night. Don't forget to create an environment conducive to sleep before bedtime, away from stimuli such as a cell phone, television or other electronic device.
  4. Do sport regularly: physical activity benefits both the body and the mind. Physical exercise helps to release endorphins, chemicals that promote feelings of well-being and reduce stress and anxiety. Find the physical activity that's right for you and try to do at least 30 minutes a day.
  5. Maintain healthy social relationships: Try to be in the company of friends, family and people who support you and with whom you feel good. Attend social events, talk and share your feelings with people you trust. You can and should also seek professional support from a therapist or psychologist.
  6. Practice stress management techniques, such as relaxation techniques, deep breathing, yoga, meditation or mindfulness. Find the best strategy for you so that you can integrate them into your daily routine.
  7. Set goals and celebrate achievements: set achievable goals in different areas of your life. This can help motivate you. Whenever you achieve a goal, however small, you should celebrate it in order to boost your self-confidence and mental well-being.
  8. Avoid overwork: work-life balance is essential for mental health. Set healthy limits and prioritize time for rest and leisure.
