Energy gels: what are they for?

Energy gels are products widely used by athletes and exercise enthusiasts to get a quick energy boost during high-intensity activities. These gels are formulated with a combination of fast-absorbing carbohydrates or long-absorbing carbohydrates, electrolytes and, in some cases, caffeine.

The carbohydrates present in energy gels provide a quick source of energy for the muscles, helping to maintain blood glucose levels during intense exercise. This can be especially beneficial in long-duration activities, such as marathon, half marathon, triathlon, IronMan or cycling, where muscle glycogen levels can be depleted.

In addition, energy gels can contain electrolytes, such as sodium and potassium, which are lost through sweat during exercise. Adequate replenishment of these electrolytes is important to maintain the body's hydroelectrolyte balance and prevent muscle cramps and fatigue.

The caffeine present in some energy gels can also provide an additional stimulus. It can help improve physical performance, reduce the perception of fatigue and increase concentration.
